Update :: June 28, 2010

Hello Friends of Charla,

It has been a very active time for Charla. Charla has taken her first road trip! Away from any medical facility. She left Boston on Wednesday and returned on Sunday. What a shot in the arm! Charla stayed at a friend's home during this short visit. Her daughter has graduated high school!!!!

On Thursday we had a small cookout before Briana's graduation ceremony. Charla had made the decision not to attend the ceremony because she did not want to distract attention from the graduates! It is their day to be recognized. We actually made out better than most because NBC acquired the portion of film where Briana accepted her diploma.

Charla met Ms. Kelly Barney in person. Ms. Barney is Briana's school guidance counsellor. She is the person who helped Briana find a college and many scholarship awards that enabled Briana to be accepted and
attend Quinnipiac this fall. Charla and Ms. Barney were finally able to sit down together and talk. Briana's future is everything to Charla. Charla could not thank Ms. Barney enough. Ms. Barney is one of the special mentors in children's lives that make a difference. The Westhill High School and parents are very fortunate to have Ms. Barney there to help the children that attend there.

Charla met Dr. Kevin Miller. This is the Stamford Hospital ER doctor that first saw Charla when the rescue team brought her in. Dr. Miller orchestrated several teams of specialists that saved Charla's life. Charla knew him by name and thanked him for saving his life. Charla met Dr. Lief Nordberg. Dr. Nordberg is a plastic surgeon that assisted in saving Charla's life. He is the key player that contacted the Cleveland Clinic during these life saving efforts. The Cleveland Clinic was in conference during this critical period to help provide their expertise in extreme facial injuries.

Charla met Andea. She is one of the first responders of the Stamford rescue squad to transport Charla to the Stamford emergency room. These people and many others are heroes. Charla wants to meet and thank all the others heroes that saved her life, help her survive, and contribute to the support of Briana. We plan to reach out to these people in the future.

More updates to come about this road trip.

Thank you for your thoughts and prayers.

Update :: June 6, 2010

Hello Friends of Charla,

Charla continues to slowly progress with regaining her strength, endurance, and stamina. She works with the physical therapist a few times a week working with light weights and a recumbent bike. Charla and I continue to do our walks and it is finally good to get outside once in a while.

We went to the Brigham and Women's hospital for more evaluations. Charla has once again proven that her mind is as sharp as ever. I tell everyone that her mind is back and there is only a little bit of short term memory loss. I am always amazed when she demonstrates this ability and proves me right. She was asked by an occupational therapist to remember four words and repeat them. The real test would be that she would ask her to repeat these words later. Later, when asked to repeat them she had no problem with remembering the words.

Dr. Alam and his family stopped by for a visit. Dr. Alam is the lead plastic surgeon on the face transplant team at the Cleveland Clinic. He and his family have not forgotten Charla and continue their support for Charla. Dr. Alam's wife Shannon, son Cameron, and new baby girl Chloe made Charla's day a very happy one.

I am having some fun here with finding furniture on the Boston's Craigslist. I meet really nice people and I always let them know how much they are helping our family.

Steve will be coming in soon and I will be heading back to my home in New York. I will stay for a day to show Steve the area and all the new routines in the new environment.

I miss my wife Larissa and I am blessed that she is there to support us. This has not and is not very easy for her. Anyone in this type of situation knows this all to well. I also miss our black cat; Simon. He has been solid support for Larissa in my absence.

Thank you for your thoughts and prayers.

Update :: May 26, 2010

Hello Friends of Charla,

Charla is doing well back at the rehabilitation nursing home. The last two days have been a very intensive evaluation process required for these transplant programs. Unlike the standard practice of care the transplant programs for body tissue is experimental and the criteria to be accepted is different. With standard practice of care, there are less unknowns about the treatment and side effects. With this experimental surgery it is still unknown what medications and doses are best to surpress the immune system and side effects.

The criteria for experimental surgery is inclusion and excusion information about the patient. There are many tests and conditions to evaluate about a patient. All other options are not workable. Their medical history and previous life style are used. Their feelings about having transplant, their past and present mental health needs to be stable. Are they well enough to have the surgery. There are no other medical problems that exist to interfer with the transplant program. The patient has to be compliant and committed to a life time of medication that surpress the immune system. Lastly, the person needs a good support system including family after the having the surgery. Specific information about the transplant program is best explained by a medical representative of the Brigham and Women's Hospital Program.

The visit to Brigham and Women's hospital was very thorough. The imaging equipment was the state of the art that produced 3-D images with a time element. You could see the internal anatomy and whatch them swallow. You could rotate the image to any position you needed to view it. One test was very uncomfortable for Charla. The test needed to check all the nerves in both of her arms. A small electrical current at increasing intervals is applied to the nerves. Uncomfortable as it was Charla she let the Doctor test the right arm again. The doctor complemented Charla for toughing it out.

Other tests are needed to complete the evaluation process for the transplant program. These tests will be ongoing for months. The great news is that nothing yet has been found to exclude her from the transplant program. The Times Herald had Charla on the front page with the title; "Facing the Odds". Although it has been over one year since the attack on Charla, her strengh and stamina is still very frail and fragle. Her rehabilitation program is demanding more and it will continue to increase to challange her more every day. Charla's daily life is a challange. Nothing comes easily. I would say that Charla is facing all the challenges.

Thank you for your thoughts and prayers.

Hello Friends of Charla,

I will be writing more on Charla's progress. Today I will address the death of Sandra Harold.

This morning I informed Charla that Sandra had died. Her first reaction was disbelief. What! She said! I repeated the news. Speechless for a few moments She made a brief comment stating that Sandra was a troubled woman and maybe she has some peace now.

The Nash family expresses their condolences to Sandra's family and support their privacy during this time of loss of a beloved family member

Thank you for your thoughts and prayers.

Update :: May 10, 2010

Hello Friends of Charla,

Progress is happening very fast now. As you probably know by now, Charla is being evaluated as a candidate for the transplant program at Brigham and Women's Hospital.

While I was working on getting Charla to Boston and setting up our living arrangements, Steve has been working with the Brigham and Women's Hospital Transplant team and Dr. Alam to provide much needed informaion. There are a lot of protocols required for any person to be a candidate in any experimental program such as a face transplan operation. Starting today Charla will be going through this evaluation process.

Nothing is a guarentee. We are praying that all goes as expected for Charla. Please help Charla with your prayers, positive energy, and loving thought for this critical next step in Charla's recovery.

During this period since the accident I have look at all the positive. Your cards, letters, and emails have help Charla and the family maintain hope and courage to see that Charla gets the surgery she needs to heal. The family has become ore aware about how we can pass on the good fortune that have been given to us.

The Staff at the Cleveland Clinic has taken care of Charla for over one year. The aides, nurses, secretaties, doctors, food service, maintenance, social workers and everyone else at the Cleveland Clinic have truely been Charlie's anglels! They are all heros that do this extremely important work every day of the year.

Charla is an inspiration to many just as many have been an inspiration to our family. We want to continue to keep the public informed on Charla's progress. We want people to know that medical science continues to improve and progress. People in the most severe accidents are healed and lead a productive and independant life.

We want to pass on the favor. When an accident occurs we found out as many other people do; it is a good plan to have your medical wishes known. Charla and I have done this and this is when we decided to pass on the favor. Someone has commited to be an organ donor to help people they will never know. Charla will be receiving these gifts. We have decided that we will be organ donors and pass on the favor to help others that we will never know.

Thank you for your thoughts and prayers.

Hello Friends of Charla, Surprise!!

Charla is in the Boston area and will be about 100 miles from where Briana will be going to school. Before the accident Charla had plans to move from Stamford CT. when Briana graduated. Briana is familiar with the Boston area because of the conventions and other visits she has made there over the past few years.

The staff at the Cleveland Clinic had a goodbye party for Charla and gave her some parting gifts. They saved my skin because Charla had asked me to get a scarf for her to wear during the transport. I forgot but some of the gifts were scarfs. I tearfully read the goodbyes from the staff and expressed my admiration for the work and services that they provide.

We have been working on this move for a few months and last night it finally happened. Charla got a head of state escort with the police escorting the Cleveland Clinic's security and medical transport team to the airport, a private jet to Boston which ended with a police escort to her new home. The team that brought Charla to Cleveland insisted that they be the team to bring her back. One member of the transport team told me he refers Charla's incident to other Doctors as a reason why you should never give up with trying to save a person life.

The Cleveland Clinic's transport team was a nice closure for starting a new chapter in Charla's recovery. Charla appreciated this and made sure to hug and thank them before leaving.

At this rehabilitation facility it is planned that Charla will receive physical therapy and occupational therapy that will teach her to be more independent. Our goal for this phase of her recovery is to move to a home environment.

Charla is very motivated with this new phase. The staff here has been in all day with Charla. They want to know her and how to accommodate her needs. Charla's unique conditions offer some challenges that other patients do not have. Charla is very articulate in responding to their questions and cooperative with trying new methods to meet her needs.

Charla appears to like this place already. Outside her window is a bush. She told me that there is a birds nest there and the bird was singing all morning. In the next few days we will explore the facility, get to know the staff and other residents.

Thank you for your thoughts and prayers.

Update :: April 24, 2010

Hello Friends of Charla,

Charla's newest food is puree meat lasagna with extra sauce. It is not the same as eating for her because she is unable to chew but the taste is good. Some foods are acceptable puree but others are not; like salad!

There has only been one or two days that were nice enough to go out and we missed them. It has been just a little too cool or wet to go outside. Charla and I have taken on the challenge of walking up stairs. Stairs take a lot of energy to do. At the moment we are just going up a couple of flights. I plan to work with her on going down stairs. I plan to have her do it backwards and in increments. Up one step then back one step; up two steps then down two steps; and so on. Stepping back give you more balance and control.

Charla is starting to drink on her own. I place a cup of tea with a straw at 12:00 o'clock. She is able to locate it with her thumb and slowly find the straw with her tongue. She likes this because she can do it at her own pace. When we hold it she feels she needs to drink faster.

I like taking walks with Charla. Sometimes we talk a lot and other times it is very quiet. They are always nice walks.

Update :: March 6, 2010

Hello Friends of Charla,

I apologize for not writing sooner. I have some good news about Briana. She has been accepted to Quinnipiac University. This was made possible by her guidance counselor Mrs. Kelly Barney. Mrs. Barney stepped up to the plate and hit Briana a home run. She did not allow Briana to fall through the cracks. Her dedication for helping students to not miss out on the most important event in her lives is truly remarkable.

I know that I would not have been able to do this for Briana. There is just too much going on where I learn what to do and be able to execute this with Briana. Mrs. Barney's help is another example of the kindness, generosity and selflessness that has been shown by many compassionate friends of Charla since the accident.

I did go with Briana to the university for a visit since she was accepted. This is a great school that will offer Briana many opportunities to grow into a very independent and well educated woman.

Briana expressed some guilt about going to this school. She knows that this would not have happened if her mom's accident had never happened. I told her that it is alright to embrace the good that follows a tragedy. This is one of the dreams your mother has for you. The fact that the reality has turned
out to be more than expected is a blessing. I told her that her mom is proud that she stayed on course to graduate from high school and seek higher education. There is nothing to feel guilty about but this is an opportunity that you need to take full advantage of.

I am at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio with Charla. I came here on the 6th, Charla is doing well but is having a little pain from a procedure. Her feeding tube needed to be replace. Most of her scalp has healed but will still take a while longer.

Charla takes me for walks in the hallways but has not ventured outside yet. This is going to change real soon because I will insist on it. I want to go up to the roof top and outside in the park to get my exercise. Today and tomorrow it will be rainy and cool but hopefully by Saturday we can do
this.

I will be catching up over the next few days and I will be providing more first hand information.

Update :: February 16, 2010

Hello Friends of Charla,

Steve came in on the third and I left on the fifth. Charla is in pretty good spirits and really happy that Steve brought a variety of flavored candy sticks. I have been cutting licorice in half and using velcro to secure it on her thumb. Delicious!

Some good news about Dr. Alam family. On 02-04-2010 12:20 pm weighing in at 6lb 5 oz, baby Chole was born. She is a very healthy and beautiful girl. Mom and daughter are doing well at home. I can not wait to hear Cameron talk about her.

Briana is on a winter break and arrived this weekend. I know Mom is happier now because she expressed missing Briana when I was out there. Briana also came with the great news of all A's on her report card. I am sure that Briana's continued progress allows Charla to not worry or get stressed out that she may not be receiving enough attention and care.

One year ago today my sister life changed forever. A call from the Stamford Hospital hinted at an event that I feared may have happened. This person told me that my sister was in an accident and I needed to come to the hospital. She stated that I needed to drive safely because my sister needed me there. Then she explained to me that this was a big media event and I needed to be discrete when I arrived. She provided me with a name and number to present to any person at a front desk or security guard.

The statement about a media event hinted at the reason for the need to keep a low profile. Fear rushed through me as I tried not to think about what I knew must have happened. Arriving at the hospital confirmed my fears.

Dr. Kevin Miller and all the surgical teams managed to save her life. The next 48 hours would be critical and then months of intensive care. It was 38 hours after coming out of surgery that Dr. Miller approached Steve and I about transferring Charla to the Cleveland Clinic. We knew then that Charla was going to survive and was strong enough to travel. Amazing!

Today, our family has hope and feels fortunate that we are able to be with Charla. Charla has met wonderful people who provide treatment and daily care. Many of them she can call friends. Charla has heard from thousands of people through letters, cards, and emails who truly care about Charla. All of the Friends of Charla have inspired, motivated, and provided her hope.

There is still a long and hard road to travel. None of it will be easy! Charla feels comfort knowing she is not alone. Our family feels comfort knowing we are not alone. Thank you all for always caring and praying for Charla. Everyone will be in our prayers.

We have hope for the future! We have faith and all the faith from everyone who is a friend of Charla.
